About tip 31 and tip 32
I have now in a few days worked with the extension I mentioned in tip 32. At first it seemed like a really good extension but there is a problem. If you click on a link in your mail program it will open up a new tab. But it will not focus on the new tab (it's opened in the background) so you have to move your mouse to the tab and click on it. It would be better it the tab opened up in the foreground.

I asked Aaron if it would be possible to open up the external link in foreground but he did not know how to do it. The only fix to the problem was to go Tools -> Options -> Advanced and then remove the checkmark from "Open links in the background" under the browsing category. But in my everyday browsing I need to open them in the background so that is really not an option for me.

I am now using the preference I mentioned in tip 31 where I let external links open in a new window. Actually this is pretty good way to handle external links in Mozilla Firefox. But I think I still would prefer to let external links open up as a tab in the foreground ( without removing the "open links in the background" ). If any of you know the solution how to do this, you can write the solution to this thread on Mozillazine or directly to Aaron Spuler http://www.mozthemes.tk

I don't like TBE so that's not an option for me.

In my opinion, it's perfekt as it is! I like the new Tabs in the Background. I'm working with a dual screen und on the right side are my eMail/News Tool, on the left side my browser. Und really really often, i have opend another side und so I'm able to "collect" the new sides und watch them step by step :-)

I would prefer background loaded tabs myself. Most of the time, I'm loading a ton of links from Spamcop from Thunderbird into Firefox. Instead of spawning a dozen windows, I wouldn't mind if they were background tabs.

One should be able to middleclick links in Thunderbird. This way you could easily open links as tabs in the background. But I don't think it's possible.

there is a way to open thunderbird links in the background.

you have to change the configuration...
in firefox, go to address about:config.
search for browser.tabs.loadDivertedInBackground
and double click it to set it to true.

I agree: Load external links in Foreground

When I first started using Aaron's "single window" extension, this was the behavior, and I loved it. When I load a link from my email, I want it to be the active tab and bring the focus to firefox. When it loads as a background tab, the focus stays on the email program. With the latest versions of firefox, all diverted links (external and internal) load in the background.

Mozilla.org needs to split the "browser.tabs.loaddivertedinbackground" preference into two separate preferences:
1) loadinternalinbackground, and
2) loadexternalinbackground.
